Part of the Societies remit is to search the ground for items not previously known – by using local knowledge, LIDAR technology, geophysical scans or metal detecting. A dig was recently undertaken beside an ancient routeway which runs from the coast to London. Nothing told up there was anything there, but signs of life and a beautiful piece of fossilised sandstone dated around 130 million years old.
