In the eighteenth century well before the Land Registry existed, surveys and plans were drawn up to assist land transfers and there were relatively few land surveyors around. We have found a few examples of local places that were mapped by John Bowra, introducing some elements and names not seen elsewhere. He was a resident of Groombridge and a co-founder of the infamous Groombridge Gang of smugglers.
